The Prawn Bilimbi Sukka is a zero oil recipe. It is a steamed preparation made with the seasonal bilimbi / bimbla, fresh shelled prawns and grated coconut. The mild sourness of the bilimbi, the sweetness of the coconut and the flavor of the prawns complement each other. Serve this as a side with rice and a plain curry like Sorak (Goan plain coconut curry – see here)

Serves: A Family of Four

Prep. Time: 30 Mins

Cooking Time: 15 to 20 Mins

Ingredients:

[ Standard Measure : 1 cup = 250 ml ]

  • Prawns (fresh, cleaned & deveined) – ½ cup
  • Bimblas / Bilimbi (washed & cut into 4 pieces) – 20
  • Coconut (fresh, grated) – ¼ cup
  • Onions (sliced) – 2 medium
  • Green Chillies (slit) – 2 to 3
  • Dry Red Chillies (broken) – 2 to 3
  • Salt – 1 tsp.

Step 1:     Apply ¼ tsp. salt to the prawns and keep aside. Apply another ¼ tsp. salt to the bilimbis and onions each and keep aside separately for 15 minutes.

Step 2:     Later take the sliced onion, bimblas, green chillies, red chillies and prawns in a heavy bottomed pan and mix. Add 2 tbsp. water and cook covered on low heat for 15 to 20 minutes till the bilimbis turn soft (check in between). Check for salt and add if required.

Step 3:     Finally add the coconut and give a mix. Switch off the heat and keep covered for 10 minutes before serving.
