Goan Green Beef Curry

The goan green beef curry is mildly spicy. Even so, the boys in our house just love it. The corriander and the aromatics make a delicious dish that can be eaten with pao or rice. This recipe was shared to me by my aunt.

Serves: 6 to 8 Persons

Prep. Time: 20 Mins. + 60 Mins. (marination)

Cooking Time: 45 to 50 Mins.

Ingredients:

[Standard Measure – 1 cup = 200 ml.]

  • Beef (boneless) – 1 kg.
  • Onions (chopped) – 4 large
  • Tomatoes (chopped) – 2 large
  • Potatoes (peeled and cut into 8 pieces) – 3 to 4 medium
  • For the Green Masala:
    • Green Corriander – 2 cups (tightly packed)
    • Green Chillies – 6 to 8
    • Ginger – 1 ½ inch
    • Garlic – 14 to 16 cloves
  • Rosy’s Spice Powder (see here) – 3 ½ level tsp.
  • Turmeric Powder – ½ tsp.
  • Vinegar – 4 tbsp.
  • Oil – 3 tbsp.
  • Salt – 3 tsp. or to taste

Step 1:     Clean, wash and cut the beef into cubes. Drain well and apply 2 ½ tsp. salt and vinegar and leave in the refrigerator to marinate for at least an hour.

Step 2:     Grind all the ingredients listed under green masala to a fine paste.

Step 3:     Heat the oil in a pressure cooker and sauté the onions till translucent. Add the tomatoes, ½ tsp. salt and cover with a lid. Cook for 6 to 8 minutes on low heat till the tomatoes are well cooked.

Step 4:     Next add the green masala to the pan and sauté on low heat for 5 to 6 minutes till you get a nice aroma and the oil separates. Add the marinated beef and mix well. Put in Rosy’s Spice Powder and ½ tsp. turmeric and give a good stir.

Step 5:     Add 1 ½ cup hot water and cover with the pressure cooker lid and cook on high heat till one whistle.  Lower the heat and cook further for another 25 to 30 minutes. Switch off the heat and allow the pressure to release naturally. When the cooker cools down, open it and check whether the meat is cooked. If needed pressure cook again (this depends on the cut of meat).

Step 6:     Transfer the meat curry to a bowl. Take 1 cup of the gravy and add it back to the pressure cooker. Add the chopped potatoes, ½ tsp. salt, ½ cup warm water and pressure cook for 2 to 3 whistles.

Step 7:     Add the cooked meat to the pressure cooker and cook further on a low flame for 5 minutes till oil floats on top.

Tip:

  • The curry is medium spicy. Reduce the number of green chillies if you prefer less heat.
